If kotaku (pretty reliable normally) and their inside informer are correct the PS3 might see more cutbacks before the PS3 is released. According to their insider the 3.2ghz CELL chip isn’t producing high enough yields for mass depolyment and manufacturing, the result? 2.8Ghz instead. What else? Remember people razing the 360 for its external powerbrick (DUH it’s an IBM Processor) well it appears that in reality the PS3 will as well need a external powersupply, no not a tiny 25w supply a 400W power brick, which was kind of expected considering it’s a IBM processor as well with an Nvidia card (both known for sucking large amounts of power). On a more cosmetic note the insider let it slip that the PS3′s final release will see alot more venting added, most likely to the sides and back, was i the only one noticing that ventilation was missing from the E3 boxes? That’s it? Nope not exactly, he also let it slip that no FULLY FUNCTIONAL ps3 betas had been completed yet. (See source for the full info from kotaku on what the insider leaked supposedly)
But at e3 we saw so many cool games, i know thats what your saying, well those were mostly on devkits, which we already knew. The difference here is the ps3 won’t have the 2GB of ram that the devkits had. And now it appears that extra head room the ps3′s were supposed to have (3.2ghz vs the DevKits 2.8Ghz) might be gone because of the manufacuring restrictions on this new chip.
None of this really suprises me considering how new the technology is… The cell is a new style embedded processor it’s bound to have issues and I hate to say it but it really is a mistake for Sony to think there first processor of this new system (cell) would work great and take over the world. If this turns out to be all true which isn’t too far fetched and the fact that the BluRay standalones have been postponed again (go figure) no one knows what’s going on over at sony’s camp. NO word has come from them on if the BluRay delay will effect the PS3, but once again that wouldn’t be suprising at all to any insiders out their or news guru’s for the shear fact that it’s new technology that sony is trying to force on everyone as soon as possible.
With sony on such a teater totter of performance and so many failed Media (UMD, BetaMax, SACD) any misstep for the ps3 launch could spell disaster, and with all the changes going on that are confirmed… 1x HDMI instead of 2 (and 0 on the lowend), Wifi Not Standard on all units, 4 controller max instead of the 7 they said would revolutionize gameplay, the loss of rumble in the remotes, 3 Ethernet ports reduced to a single port. Thing’s are falling apart fast in my eyes, or atleast that’s what it appears like to me.
