Has wintel completely disappeared from sight? I mean really what the hells going on, first AMD is adopting vista early and Intel is holding off till service pack 1. Now Intel is announcing they are releasing a Linux Based Mobile Internet Device. Though its slightly targeted differently instead of targeting IT Professionals, Intel plans to target the Prosumer market. From the interface it looks like its not really setup from the getgo to be a “PC” it’s more a mobile device, like the one that nokia released a few years ago that was like a super mini tablet.
According to the specs, it will come in a variety of SKU’s with it sporting between a 4.5″ and a 6″ screen, with resolutions of 800×480 to 1024x600 and will be showcasing the new Intel Stealey class of Duo chips, that are apparently ultra battery saving. Which we will most likely see hitting Windows UMPC’s and UltraMobile Laptops in the near future as well. The devices will ship using a Intel tweaked version of China’s RedFlag MIDINUX and it will boot to allow users access to a variety of proprietary and opensource tools like, google maps, web based office, and enterprise applications. It will apparently be sporting HSDPA and WiFi.
Now let me just say this right now, from what i’ve read and see I really see this more as competeing with devices like the AMEO (bottom left) especially if you add in the new deepfish browser microsofts releasing, than the newer UMPC’s like the HTC Shift, sporting full Aero Glass Support. Especially as the MID from intel is currently being presented.
