Apparently the One Laptop Per Child initiative is pushing forward. With some interesting news, apparently Negroponte is suggesting that they are currently working with microsoft to offer a lightweigh version of Windows for the once linux only mini laptops.
They also released a “firm” pricetag of 176$ which apparently includes their 3$ profit margin. Whats even more interesting is that while the project was developed for countrys that are poverty ridden, a total of 19 state governors from the US have expressed interest in the laptops for their own school children. While I don’t think they meant middle-high schoolers more the elementry school crowd. I think its a great idea! Get kids started off very early with a nice easy to use durable cheap PC.
Negroponte admits that the US wasn’t what the solution was designed for, the US market can’t be ignored, and the product can easily be adopted to fit the US marketplace. Personally I’d rather them stop blabbing, work with MS and the governors and get the darn things in kids hands. The 100$ laptop project is now 176$, the least you can do is start shipping the da*n things!
