Holy crap microsoft hits their Zune target sales by the goal date!

People might like saying that apple is the king of mp3, and that microsofts zune was a waist of time. But from day 1 Microsoft has said they wanted to hit 1 Million zunes sold by June 1, 2007. Heres the funny part, Microsoft has announced that they have sold slightly over 1 million zunes! Yes you heard that right, microsoft has hit their goal on zune sales.

Robbie Bach, told the san francisco chronicle that the companys 1 million zunes gives it a 10% share of the hard disk based player category, one hell of a start for the company if you ask me. Makes me personally wonder if all those apple fanboys were a little fast on the draw calling the zune a failure. I mean yes iPods have sold around a 100 million, but the fact is they’ve been around for what 6 years? And they pretty much own the arena, but its funny isnt it how microsoft and the Entertainment division use the exact same tactics and have the same results so far?

I mean the Xbox1 came out into a heavily filled arena run by playstation, and made a decent launch, but then came the 360 that put it ahead and first out the door in the 2.0 category. Now we have the zune meeting the microsoft expectations, into a very filled category rulled by apple, the question is whats going to happen when its Zune 2.0 vs iPod 6.0, could we be seeing a similar event at that point as well?

Robbie admits that the “social” at 1 million isnt as wide and easy to use as they wish it to be, but he sees in the future since all old and new zunes will always be compatabile within the Zune Social that the future zune plans will see the social zune network grow to where they want it where everyones sharing music with each other. They didn’t discuss however the Zune 2.0 yet, only the new pink and watermellon colored zunes.

What’s ironic however, is that even the boys over at engadget are sarcastic over the new pink zune, while the fact is that the pink zune is currently only second to the black zune, Microsoft launched the pink zune and it surpassed the white and brown zunes which both were quite popular. So it seems custom colors is a pretty good ticket to boosting the social :)
