Apparently right before E3 that big “ps3 price cut” that sony announced isn’t all it’s cracked up to be… in fact the price is still going to be 599…. the only thing different is it’s an 80gb units now…. Why? Because the 60gb units that went on sale for 499$ are basically on a fire sale. Sony will no longer be selling or creating new 60gb models for the USA.
So that makes the 20gb and the 60gb GONE…. and the new 80gb for 599$ still as expensive as ever!
And on top of that in europe they’ll still be stuck with the old 60gb units at the same cost.
So once the 60GB is gone, that will be the end of the 60GB then?
In America, yes.
Why not offer the 80GB model in Europe?
The difference between 60GB and 80GB is not really necessary. The difference in cost between a 60 and 80 is just Euro cents; it’s nothing, because the cost of memory is so small.
Probably we could have gone for 80GB, but does it really make any difference? We just know that we get a better supply on the 60GB than we will on the 80GB. So we chose to continue with the 60GB until we find that we can get something better, maybe lower cost. It just didn’t seem necessary to us.
Also let me recap: Europe gets the 60gb for 599euro .. the US gets 80gb fror 599$ and will eventually loose the 499$ version (god do they ever want the average person to buy a ps3?) All of the new models are LOOSING hardware backwards compability in exchange for software Backwards Compatability to reduce cost… but not price.
And on top of that the 100$ price different for the 60gb to 80gb… actually costs sony “a few euro cents” yet the greedy bastards are still only going to give europeans the 60gb model and keep the few cents for themselves.

PS: But as many of my friends have pointed out perhaps this isnt as bad as it sounds to potential buyers… considering their will probably be 60gb on shelves for a while considering how slowly they’re selling.
