$169 buys you one hell of a DVD player

In the days of HDDVD and Bluray battling it out back and forth for our consumer dollars their is an alternative, one that doesn’t include rebuying your entire DVD collection to work on your pimp new plasma HDTV.

Well that alternative route is an Upscaling DVD Player such as the above, Oppo DV-980h that not only lets you get rolling with full DivX support, and 1080p Upscaling. It also includes HDMI 1.2 and full 7.1 channel audio, all for a whopping $169.00. Theirs been a lot of other Upscaling DVD players but none that I have seen that offer a nice roundup of features like this combined with a wicked price point.

Their is one big bad point between HDDVD and Upscaled DVD’s. You won’t get the pimp new features that the HDDVD’s have. Mainly HDi, you know the dual stream videos, that allow for picture in picture commentary, Internet connectivity, and other nifty little features. But hey most Bluray’s don’t even have those features (BD1.1) so maybe mix a hddvd player and a DVD upscaling, then you can just get the bluray exclusives on DVD and upscale them :)
