Waterproof Keyboard, theres an idea!

Wow ever spill a cup of coffee or perhaps just accidentally bump that coke into your keyboard, ya me too in fact i spilt a coke about 3″ from my keyboard tonight, well the boys over at lenovo are making the move to bring their “armored pc” to life, you know that cool video of the lenovo laptop that hovers when it falls and has like shields to protect it from spills. Ok so it isnt that cool but it is a keyboard that is “spillproof” in fact they dumped a cup of water on it and just kept going so definitly a step in the right direction. And i must agree with gizmondo and the others, i wouldnt really see this being added to those stock 10$ white keyboards but definitly perhaps the multihundred dollar logitech dinovo keyboards :).

HDDVD vs BLURAY

I was avoiding a post about this but someone notified me about a news article a few days ago over at foxnews. Now while foxnews is definitly NOT my favorite place to find tech news they had some very interesting writeups compairing hddvd and blurary (everyone on this site knows which way i lean, hddvd). First of all they make a heavy point that with HDDVD easily able to produce HDDVD/DVD flip discs on the same machinery and bluray not able to do the same that definitly is a winning combo, the fact is compatability normally wins, and with Sony known for Media failures (UMD, SACD, etc) this isn’t going to end well.

They also analyse the fact that Dell and some other big names have backed bluray and are producing Bluray equiped computers and devices, but then they mention most of these places also deployed the venerable “Zip Discs” and we all know how that ended up. In the end it comes down to them saying no real decision can be made for atleast 3-4 years because until then its all just going to be a guessing game, and with the new upscaling dvd players basically making all your dvd’s about the same quality as HDDVD and Bluray who needs either to watch great movies? Ya sure if my disc is a flipdisk that has a hddvd then ill watch it but why else? Well the following from Ulanoff pretty much sums up my feelings.

“Warner is smart enough to know that it can sneak HD DVD content into the hands of consumers by burning it onto the back of regular DVD discs. Dvorak noted in his column that Blu-ray technology can’t achieve this same feat (not without jumping through some significant technical hurdles).

The PS3 will be a blockbuster. Early supplies will sell out. And these gamers will, by default, get a brand new Blu-ray drive. Gamers already expect a lot from their consoles, so the “extra interaction” Blu-ray offers may not mean much to them. But the PS3′s success will not help Blu-ray win in the marketplace. This is because Sony’s aiming at the wrong target audience.

HD DVD and Blu-ray will achieve success only if they reach critical mass in the general consumer marketplace. The gaming market is not the general market. The vast majority of consumers who watch DVDs and even own HD sets are not 12- to 25-year-old die-hard gamers. Instead, they’re 25- to 55-year-old adults with children who have better things to do than play games.”, Ulanoff

PS3 loosing another exclusive?

WOW this shocked even me, it would appear that the old Sony exclusive “Devil May Cry” isn’t going to be exlusive to the ps3, in fact they are already saying that it looks like its coming to the 360 and the wii consoles. Just 1 more reason the ps3 this time around is loosing ground, i mean realistically whats next MGS4 for the 360? (considering konami already said the previously done stuff could also easily be done on the 360). This is definitly another kick in the gut to the sony team.

Shame on you sony! Bluray faked

Well the 10 year anniversary bluray party was a smash supposedly, with the brand new bluray equiped 17″ vaio’s sporting video playing of the house of flying daggers bluray content as apparent from the open bluray cases… Well turns out the snoops over at gearlog clicked the “open” button on the bluray drive to discover a wonderful little DVD+R. LOL so all the fans around yelling “wow thats so crisp so beautiful, wow” can pretty much just go grab a dvd and watch it LOL. See this is where i have previously voiced my concern bluray and hddvd’s quality of video difference even on HD displays is so small its hard to justify the extremely high costs especially on the bluray side (the vaios i believe are gonna go for 3500-4000$). So if in the end a DVD+R disc can fool people into thinking its bluray then why get bluray? Shame on you Sony…

Whats even more funny about this situation is the fact that sony is forcing people to adopt bluray via the sony PSP and the vaio laptops as is there normal motto (for examples see PSP and UMD format) but in the end they themselves apparently cant even get their hands on the actual bluray discs LOL.

CreativeLabs vs Apple… The Showdown!

It was bound to happen, I mean the 2 companys devices look so similar and perform basically the same functions. But in a world filled by patent applications and people locking basicaly every bit of intellectual property available. It would appear that Creative Labs might just have a case vs its more successful (mp3 wise atleast) competitor. It would appear that Creative Labs filed for a patent for certain user interface components that are found in the iPod series of devices from Apple, not only were they granted the patent the fact is they had the patent application submitted a full 5 months prior to the iPod’s release. This should make for a very entertaining case.

This isn’t just an “i want licensing” ploy from Creative, Creative has already asked the US International Trade Commission (ITC) to halt sales of all iPods and investigate whether Apple infringed on its Singapore-based patent covering Creative Zen multimedia players. To be completely honest while the patent is on something quite common and pretty much present in every single music device like the iPod and Zen, facts are facts if the patent was applied before the iPod released and Creative owns the patent they should be allowed to inforce their intellectual propertys!
